How to change your company's SIC code
Last reviewed: 2026-10-18
SIC codes describe what a company does. You can list up to four and change them on the next confirmation statement — here is how.
What SIC codes are
Standard Industrial Classification codes are five-digit codes describing a company's activities, from the UK SIC 2007 list of about 730 codes. The registrar requires at least one and allows up to four. They drive statistics, lender and insurer risk models, and the sector pages on this site.
When you can change them
Only on a confirmation statement. You do not have to wait for the anniversary: file a statement early, update the codes, and the review period resets from that date. There is no extra fee if you've already paid this year's.
How to do it
WebFiling → Confirmation statement → "Update SIC codes" → remove or add codes → submit. The change appears on the public register within a day and on Kompanies the following night.
Choosing a code
Pick the code that best describes where revenue comes from, not what you might do one day. Common catch-alls: 62012 (software development), 70229 (management consultancy), 47910 (online retail), 41202 (domestic building), 96090 (other service activities). Browse all codes by popularity.
Common questions
Can I change a SIC code any time?
Only on a confirmation statement. You can file one early at no extra charge beyond the normal fee.
How many SIC codes can a company have?
Up to four.
Does the SIC code affect tax?
Not directly, but lenders, insurers and HMRC risk profiling use it, so keep it accurate.
